District 1050 Rotarians participate in scouts and guides Chamboree
The Chamboree 2010, held at Tabley hosted Scout and Guide movements from around the world aged 10½ - 18 with their Adult Leaders and Helpers.

There were 3000+ campers from Cheshire, around the UK and from various parts of the World.

So why were Rotarians there?

We were invited to share with the young people and their leaders, knowledge of the many international aid projects with which we are involved.

International Chair Rod Stokes (Nantwich) co-ordinated the event. He set up displays and arranged presentations in a dedicated marquee. On display were a shelter box, a life box, a shoe box, a Jaipur limb and a wheelchair from the Wheelchair Foundation. Activities involving life straws were also arranged together with the ‘Homeless World Cup’.

Teams of Rotarians made 20 minute presentations to up to 20 scouts and guides at a time. 18 presentations for each of the 5 days. Hard work for the 15 or so involved, but very worthwhile, enabling coverage of all 3000 plus young people present.

From the expressions on their faces, it was clear that many of the youngsters were receiving a whole new experience. For example, although they were familiar with the consequences of natural disasters, most had never heard of Polio and its crippling effects and were absorbed by the simple but life changing effects of the Jaipur Limb and Wheelchair Foundation projects. Their leaders were equally impressed.

One young man even donated his pocket money to the Jaipur Limb project and another couple of lads, when asked to leave their group to have photographs taken, declined because they wanted to hear more of what they were being told.
Adrian Ramsden (Macclesfield), who will be leading the GSE team to visit D3180 in the New Year, demonstrated his acting prowess as a refugee, looking every bit the part, even when he was not acting!

Most of the audience, including the leaders, were from outside 1050’s catchment area, but all who took part agreed it was a most worthwhile exercise and would do it again. Most of the youngsters had not heard of Rotary let alone know about the work we do. There are now over 3000 for whom that is no longer the case.
