No more Lifeboxes left: Urgent plea to clubs to raise funds for more to go to Haiti

Boxer Ricky Hatton is not pulling his punches in support of Rotary Lifeboxes following news that the entire UK stock of boxes is about to be airlifted to Haiti for immediate distribution.

The Lifebox warehouse in Rochdale is now completely empty, and the team of volunteer packers is making an urgent appeal to Rotary clubs for donations to help fill more boxes and send them on their way.

Accompaning the initial consignment of 159 Lifeboxes are 900 extra Lifestraws, the portable water purification device that can make contaminated water safe to drink. Including those packed in the boxes, that means 1,800 Lifestraws will be available in Haiti within days. Together they will have enough filtration capacity to process 1.25 million litres of contaminated water.

Originating in District 1050 more than 35 years ago, Lifebox was the first ever crisis relief box and to date well over 26,000 have been flown to disasters in more than 30 countries. But the tragedy in Haiti has resulted in the biggest ever single consignment, valued at £40,000.

Lifebox chairman Mike Davies, currently in the Caribbean to supervise the operation, has made an urgent plea for all clubs to make every effort to raise funds so that many more boxes can be filled and sent to Haiti.

The Lifebox contains 72 individual items – tools, clothes, blankets, babycare and hygiene products, toys and classroom materials – each box includes vital aids for both adults and children.
