Massive drive now under way throughout District 1050 to send help to suffering Haiti
All hands go to work to send a constant stream of Shelterboxes to Haiti All hands go to work to send a constant stream of Shelterboxes to Haiti

Just seven days after the earthquake struck Haiti Rotary clubs throughout District 1050 are coming up with ways to raise as much as they can to help the suffering people in a country that has been torn apart.

Between them three clubs alone have raised more than £6,000 in just two days – and the total collected is growing rapidly every day.

"The general public are being as generous as they were following the Tsunami in 2004," said District International Service Chairman Rod Stokes.

"Street and supermarket collections are yielding excellent results. Some clubs have donated from their own funds and others are currently deciding what they wish to do.

"Schemes like Shelterbox, Lifebox and Water Survival Box are great ways of helping with the immediate problem. Shelterbox have quickly shipped between 700 and 1,000 units and are committed to sending thousands more.

"Lifebox have shipped 150 units and Water Survival Box 200 units. These stocks need to be replenished quickly.

"In the long term money will be needed to help rebuild the lives of millions shattered by the earthquake.

"RIBI President David Fowler has launched an appeal and payments can be made to RIBI Donations Trust, marked "Haiti Earthquake Appeal."

"These funds will be routed via District 7020 for rebuilding work, both physical and mental. This is the route that I am sure will be used by some clubs.

"The extent of the distaster and how we in District 1050 are helping will become clearer over the next few days and weeks. Watch this site for updates."

Clubs are asked to send reports on what they are doing to support the Haiti relief fund by emailing derek@meakin.net
