Northwich raises over £3,600 in one day to help Haiti relief

Northwich Rotarians were quick off the mark to support the Haiti relief effort by organising impromptu street collections to fund Rotary Shelterboxes – and in the first day raised an amazing £3,658.

That was enough to supply seven Shelterbox to help to ease the suffering of the desperate survivors of the earthquake that has shattered their lives.

Collecting points were set up in the busy Weaver Square shopping centre and Sainsbury's, which were manned throughout the day by members of the two local clubs – Northwich and Northwich Vale Royal.

A Shelterbox and its contents – a tent for ten people, stove, blankets and other items essential for survival – is now on permanent display at the Rotary shop in the town's shopping centre, so that the public can see how their donations are being spent.

Northwich Vale Royal president, Graeme Soutar, said: "Our grateful thanks go to all those who made donations and the management and staff at the shopping centre and Sainsbury's, without whose assistance and support this total would not have been achieved."

Thousands of Shelterboxes have now been packed by volunteers at the campaign headquarters and are being flown out to Haiti by Virgin Atlantic.

In Port-au-Prince itself, Shelterbox team member David Eby said: "The city is totally devastated. Our host, a local Rotarian, told us: 'There is no more Haiti'. We are all now working hard to resolve security, logistics and communications."

His colleague Richard Lewis added: "The situation is changing by the minute and we are exploring every avenue available to us in order to make sure aid gets to those who need it as quickly as possible."

And Virgin boss Richard Branson said: "Everyone who has seen the sheer destruction in Haiti over the last few days will have been moved to help in every way they can."

Cornish Rotarian Tom Henderson, the founder of Shelterbox, said every bit of support at this time was crucial.

"What we've seen in the last few days has been staggering," he said. "People in Haiti need our help, and we don't stop until they get it.

"If you can help in any way I urge you to do so."
