When it comes to New Year Honours the Rotary Club of Holmes Chapel is not without recognition and two more club members are now wearing the prestigious Paul Harris emblem, symbol of outstanding work and dedication to the Rotary Movement.

It all happened at the Rotary Club ‘s Presidents Evening at Cranage Hall when Past President Len McGarry and fellow Rotarian Nigel Tayor surprisingly found themselves in line for Paul Harris Awards from District Governor Ian Priestley.

In his presentation address District Governor Ian praised the work of both members ---Rotarian Len for his valuable service in the field of defibrillators and their importance in resuscitating heart-attack victims, while Rotarian Nigel’s skilful and highly- professional photographic work, both at local and District level, had done much to promote the image of Rotary.

District Governor Ian was also pleased to reveal that Rotary International’s Polio-Plus target of 200 million dollars raised over the past 25 years has now been reached, with the illness being virtually eradicated in India. As promised, Microsoft boss Bill Gates has added a further 50 million dollars to Rotary’s target.

On behalf of the club, Rotarian David Shakesby presented District Governor Ian Priestley with a £750 cheque for Rotary Foundation which is the charitable trust fund of Rotary International.

More than 50 Rotarians, partners and guests attended the evening’s dinner which ended with lively song and dance entertainment from the 15--strong Musical Mayhem group from Crewe.

President Philip Sims thanked everyone who had contributed to such a successful and enjoyable evening.
